Assistive Technology (AT) Team
When the Colorado Department of Education addressed the varying needs of individuals necessitating alternative, assistive or augmentative communication devices, it pulled together a statewide committee to make recommendations. This committee became known as the SWAAAC - State-Wide Assistive, Alternative, Augmentative Communication. Since then, districts have developed their own SWAAC committee or coordinators who are trained in assistive, augmentative and alternative communication technologies. SWAAAC services enable students with disabilities access and participate in educational opportunities.
Assistive technology is any tool that helps people function more effectively in order to gain access to educational opportunities. Students with disabilities that interfere with their communication, learning, social relationships, mobility and active participation are potential users.
Any member of a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) team may initiate a referral to the AT team. There is a specific referral requirement in order for the coordinator to initiate assessment. An evaluation may include some or all of the following: students, parents, special educators, general educators, speech/language pathologists, physical therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist and/or school. To contact the AT Coordinator please call 719-327-2823.
