Participation in State Assessments
In accordance with Board of Education policy, a parent or guardian of a student enrolled in the district may request that his or her child be exempt from participating in one of more state assessments. This exemption policy applies only to mandatory state assessments and shall not apply to district or classroom assessments. Parents are not required to provide a reason for the exemption, and the request for exemption may either apply to all or specific state assessments. A request for exemption will be valid only during the school year in which it is requested. Parents choosing to have their child excused from the state assessments must submit an email request for exemption to the school principal by clicking on the applicable link below.

Note on college readiness assessment: Beginning Spring 2017, Colorado will switch to the Colorado SAT from the Colorado ACT as the mandatory college readiness assessment for all 11th grade students. The SAT will replace the ACT as the college readiness exam that will appear on a student's transcript as required by Colorado law (C.R.S. 22-7-1016). For questions regarding this change in assessments, parents are encouraged to contact Mrs. Thompson, College Counselor, at 630-5031.
Federal Laws and Policies
Federal law requires public school districts to each year provide notification to parents and eligible students of their rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Student Photos and Video Images
Classroom activities and school events are sometimes photographed or videotaped by District staff members or by various non-school groups (newspapers, TV, universities, etc.). Additionally, the District frequently posts photographs and videos on District or school websites. If parents DO NOT want their child’s photograph or video image to be published for news media or school publicity purposes, use the link below to access the opt-out form.

Choosing to opt-out of publication applies only to classroom activities and school events that are not open to the public. Public events such as sporting events, theatre productions, concerts, award presentations, etc. are open to the public and are not subject to this option.
Release of Directory Information
FERPA defines "directory information" as information contained in school records that generally would not be considered harmful or breach confidentiality if disclosed. The most common directory information typically includes: name, electronic mail address, date and place of birth, dates of attendance, grade level, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, honors and awards received, and the most recent school attended.
Colorado law specifically prohibits the release of student telephone numbers and addresses without consent, except to military recruiters (high school only) as required by law.
A school may disclose directory information (but only directory information) to anyone, without consent, unless parents each year notify (in writing) the principal of their child's school that they wish to opt out of these disclosures. Parents wishing to opt out of these disclosures must provide the written notification by September 7 (or the following Monday if September 7 falls on a weekend) of each school year.
Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex/gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.
Service Animals in Our Schools
The Cheyenne Mountain School District complies with Colorado and federal regulations concerning the rights of persons with service animals and will permit service animals on school premises and in school-owned vehicles. The District will hold information sessions at each school in which a service animal will be present so that students can be instructed on proper procedures for interacting with the animal.
